Louis Armstrong and the "Little Rock Nine"
I hope this is the place to put this.
In the news this week is Louis Armstrong (a famous jazz musician) and the "Little Rock Nine" (not one of his tunes). Using Google I have not been able to find a copy/transcript of the original article by Larry Lubenow. I would like to read it. Can someone help me to find it? To clarify, I'm not looking for articles published this week. Does anyone have a link to the original newspaper article published in 1957? Thank you. |

Unfortunately, I cannot find it and the Grand Forks Herald archives don't have the years between 1987 and 1920-something online.
It's an interesting story though. I read about it in one of Louis' biographies. I'd be interested in seeing the article if you do find it.

I'll try to see what I can dig up in the archives here, but NYTimes has an op-ed.

i did searches on a couple interlibrary databases and couldnt find anyplace that gets and archives that newspaper.
but it was a wire service story, so finding various fragments of the piece is easy enough--and there is a series of related pieces from within a few days of the article's appearance that canvass a much broader cross-section of african-american musicians (for the most part)--all of whom agree entirely with louis. i think there's one in the my times around 24 september 1957. they are available online as .pdfs, which is why i didnt paste anything here. your best bet would be to see about tracking down microfilm via interlibrary loan through an academic or good public library. i just saw that you're in amsterdam. these folk might be able to help: http://www.iisg.nl/ and it'd be easiest if they could....if not, let me know and i'll see what i can come up with. it'll take a little while tho.

It seems odd to me that this is so hard to find.
Thanks for your help, all of you! This kind of research is too heavy for me. I can Google but that's about it. Asking here was more fruitful than asking in the jazz forum that I tried. Of course if I get lucky I'll post what I get here. |

well, i can ask tomorrow when i go to a library about getting ahold of microfilm for the paper and see what happens. i'll let you know.
the institute for social history is a fascinating place, though---lots of excellent material lives there. i'd treat this as an excuse to check it out, too.
