4 by 4? Animal Style? WTF?

So I hung out with a coworker last night which was pretty cool, and after work we went out to grab a burger.

We went to In-N-Out and on the way I had told him that the double double rarely fills me up.

So he ordered me something I'd never heard of before... a 4 by 4 "Animal style".

What'd I get? A 4 patty cheeseburger with extra "jizz" as he put it.

So I'd never heard of such a thing, nor was I able to find it on the menu. When I asked how he knew about such things, he said it was because of his uncle in So Cal.

So I'm courious what other combonations are there?

By the way, my cheat meal was DELISH! Especially my coke-a-cola! But when I went back for my refill, it wasn't as good. :( Got old fast, I guess.

Cynthetiq 09-29-2006 10:51 AM

try google search, you'd have found it fast...personally a double double is just right for me.

I miss In-N-Out.... they have the best burgers of all the chains ever...

The Hidden In-N-Out Burger (aka In and Out Burger) - The Most Accurate Secret Menu

In-N-Out Burger has a secret unpublished menu for insiders who are In-The-Know. Next time you're at In-N-Out (i.e. tomorrow . . . or maybe tonight), order a bag of these off-the-menu specials:

"3-by-3" = three meat patties and three slices of cheese.

"4-by-4" = four meat patties and four slices of cheese.

"2-by-4" = two meat patties and four slices of cheese.

*Note: You can get a burger with as many meat patties or cheese slices as you want. Just tell the In-N-Out Burger cashier how many meat patties and how much cheese you want and that is what you'll get! For instance, if you want 6 pieces of meat and 10 pieces of cheese tell them you want a "6-by-10."

"Double Meat" = like a Double Double without cheese.

"3 by Meat" = three meat patties and no cheese.

"Animal Style" = the meat is cooked and fried with mustard and then pickles are added, extra spread and grilled onions are added.

"Animal Style Fries" = fries with cheese, spread, grilled onions and pickles (if you ask for them).

"Protein Style" = for all you low-carbohydrate dieters, this is a burger with no bun (wrapped in lettuce).

"Flying Dutchman" = two meat patties, two slices of melted cheese and nothing else - not even a bun!

Fries "Well-Done" = extra crispy fries . . . even better than the regular!

Fries "Light" = opposite of fries well-done, more raw than most people like 'em

"Grilled Cheese" = no meat, just melted cheese, tomato, lettuce and spread on a bun.

"Veggie Burger" = burger without the patty or cheese. Sometimes we call this the "Wish Burger."

"Neapolitan" Shake = strawberry, vanilla and chocolate blended together.

The friendly employees of In-N-Out Burger will take your special order without question, if you use the right terminology. The printed receipt will have your special request typed on it just as we said it.

Try it!

That 4X4 sounds even more extreme than my surprise the other day ...during my rare trip into a BurgerKing and I see they now have a triple wopper.

A somewhat strange combination from around here in Philadelphia that I used to eat and enjoy: a few years ago when Levis' Hot Dogs was still open near 6th & Rodman Sts. and I lived half block away down Rodman, they had a "combo" which was a hot dog with a fish cake mushed over it; add the usual relish, onions, mustard, ketchup ...some people considered that a strange combo.

Damn, I'm gonna see if they have any In-N-Out around here, that made me hungry.

la petite moi 09-29-2006 10:56 AM

Good god, another way to pack in the cholesterol. :rolls eyes:

Jason762 09-29-2006 11:20 AM

Cynthetiq, true I could've googled it, but then how would fellow TFP-ers know about it?

BadNick, lol sounds like a unique combo. Let me know if you find an In-N-Out and what you order.

Le Peite Moi, true but the occosinal cheat meal can be benifital to the dieting person. Especially if they've been going at it for a long time. It helps reset the metabolism and if used properly it can actually bust a pleateau.

Of course, I haven't had a pleateau yet, but it was a nice mental reward.

BadNick 09-29-2006 12:06 PM

Sadly, I went to In-N-Out's website and they are only in CA, NM, AZ :( Zero doubt I will try this next time I'm on the opposite coast.

...I'll go back and look for franchise opportunities on the East Coast and then I could own the cake and eat it too.

sigh I miss them... i get the In N Out Urge all the time...

and I won't have any of the NYC imitators that try to be them... no way Jose.

I think I originally heard something on Fark, then I googled it and found out the rest.

Not to detract from In-N-Out, which I make a point to grab whenever I'm out on the Left Coast, but the chains that I actually really and truely miss now that I'm out of the South are Chick-Fil-A and Waffle House. Yes, I'll take 3 Chicken Biscuits and a large Diet Coke to go please. Or steak and eggs, medium, over easy, scattered and smothered.

mmmmmmm, scattered and smothered....

Frosstbyte 09-29-2006 12:48 PM

There's really only one In n Out in San Francisco, unfortunately, but I make my best effort to go there as often as possible. Give me a double double animal style with fries well done every time.

I'm drooling just thinking about it.

rmarshall 09-29-2006 12:53 PM

My buddy's boy described something similar that he got at Wendy's here in Toronto. So, after reading this post I googled it and found that Wendy's is In-N-Out. I didn't know. I just read that Wendy's owns Tim Horton's and is selling off their shares. What is the world coming too?

I'd never eat a 4by4. It sounds like an instant heart attack!

kutulu 09-29-2006 01:24 PM

Just what we all need, a 20,000 calorie lunch!

No one needs to gorge themselves on fat and lard and grease. Ever.

Wendy's is FAR from being an IN-N-OUT. Wendy's and IN-N-OUT co-exist in the left coast.

LIES! WICKED EVIL LIES!
The proper term is "beef tallow".
Mmmm... Tallow.

In-n-Out is very tasty, though.

That's alright. We'll have our In-N-Out and you guys can have your White Castle.

Hah hah, I really wanted to eat there after seeing the movie, "Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle".

That movie was friggin halarious!

The one nice thing about AZ is that we have the best of both worlds. We even have my favorite burger joint, In N Out. Chick-Fil-A is pretty good. The only place we don't have down here that I miss from the midwest is White Castle. Sometimes nothing can beat a slider. *sigh* We have Waffle Houses AND IHOP. It's a great, great state...

you can get White Castle frozen burgers.... unfortunately InNOut is all about the freshness....

Mistress Cathy 09-29-2006 04:37 PM

I LOVE LOVE LOVE IN N OUT!!! just a tad bit of trivial about the establishment... it is family owned, no franchises, and every cup and burger rapper has a bible verse printed on them (the drink cups in each different size has a different verse quote on them)

streak_56 09-29-2006 05:08 PM

OMG!!! WE NEED AN IN AND OUT IN CALGARY!!!

Aw c'mon...grease is probably the healthiest thing that I eat. :D

My first heart attack in 7...6...5...4...

Omaha was host to a few In and Out locations, several years ago. Unfortunately, they didn't fare as well as they thought that they should have, and pulled up stakes. I miss In and Out. :(

There are a lot of things in life that we don't "need".

I say... enjoy the one life you get.

So if the people who enjoy what they eat all drop at 80, and those who ate totally healthy all their life drop at 100, my answer to you is this:

"I enjoyed my life, and I'll beat you to heaven." Who can argue with that? lol

West Coaster here, and since Hubby's from the East, whenever we go and visit we make sure to hit Chick-Fil-A several times. I've often fantasized about bringing a Chick-Fil-A franchise out here. I think it'd go over frickken gangbusters. But I don't have that $100,000 set up $.

I've eaten at one Waffle House in Fort Worth, TX, and I have to say I wasn't impressed.

And yes, In-And-Out is the bom. The burgers, anyway. I don't care for the fries.

Sultana, my father goes to Chick-fil-a in LA... the website locator shows several in California... most in San Bernadino County

As others have said...it isn't a 'need'. But let me tell you...mmm..I could take a big, greasy cheeseburger right now.

I don't think i could finish a 4x4 though. I'd do the 2x2. However, I've never been to an In-N-Out. I think my favorite place for fast food hamburgers is Hardees, but we don't have any of those around here either. Oh well, I settle for Wendy's. But luckily, we live 3 blocks from Portillo's, a Chicago-franchise. OMG, those are some of the best greasiest burgers ever and you have to add bacon and cheese...just to enjoy clogging your arteries that much more. Oh and cheese fries...
OK, have to get food I'm starving now.

Oh and a side note...White Castle is only good when you're drunk and just need greasy food. ;)

raeanna74 10-01-2006 04:13 PM

That sounds cool. I have not gotten around much obviously cause I've not even heard of an "In and Out" let alone seen one.

When I go out, if I want something done differently I will ask for it. It's annoying though when the cashier doesn't get it. Like asking for a biscuit instead of an english muffin on a particular breakfast sandwich. Some of them look at you like they've never heard of a muffin. This would be nice as the people would be trained to cater to your preferances.

I have found that since I moved further north that most restaurants don't even serve biscuits. Or if they do, they are not good. I miss southern-type cooking at times.

I never special order at restaurants anymore. My order always gets messed up so I've learned to either pick out what I don't want in my food or order something different. I've never been to a restaurant that actually follows the 'made to order' style.

Mrs Master 10-02-2006 12:21 AM

Burger King is Hungry Jacks down this way, one bacon cheese buger deluxe is enough to make my stomach drop to my knees. As for a 4x4 I'd be passed out on the couch calling for a stomach pump!

n0nsensical 10-02-2006 11:53 AM

In n Out is definitely great. The bible verses on the cups and wrappers are irritating, but its all going in the trash anyway which is fitting. The best location has to be the one at LAX. Its like 100 feet from the runway and you can pretend youre a palestinian and throw rocks at the planes landing and probably hit them. (and then be summarily and extraordinarily renditioned)

Halx 10-03-2006 04:23 PM

I've been ordering a Double Double Animal Style with no pickles for YEARS. I love In-N-Out .. wish they had one where I live now.

MSD 10-06-2006 03:41 PM

Until In-n-Out decides to set up shop on the East coast, I'm going to have to deal with ordering four $1 double cheeseburgers at McDonald's, removing bread from the middle, and stacking them. I can barely even find a Burger King around here anymore and the nearest IHOP just moved out.

There are two colleges in my town, we need strip malls consisting entirely of fast food restaurants here

jorgelito 10-06-2006 05:44 PM

I live near a couple of In n Outs. Way overated in my opinion, not worth the hype. I do like the little bible verses they put on their wrappers, I think it's a cool unique touch. But the burgers and fries just aren't that great and definitely not worth the stupid ridiculous lines. One cool thing is I saw Shaq in the drive through once, that was neat. I can see why he is so damn fat.

Bacchanal 10-07-2006 09:54 PM

I ate at one of those places while I was in Vegas last Februrary. One of the guys I was with got a 4x4 animal style. He tried to talk me into ordering one as well, but I can't stand mustard, and I'm not a fan of pickles either. I just got a 2x2 with ketchup and lettuce only. While I thought the burger was decent, the fries were just this side of terrible.

Blackthorn 10-08-2006 08:24 AM

I wasn't sure what to expect when I clicked on this thread but now I'm craving a heart-stopper! It also makes me wonder where is the ever elusive king of all burgernauts....

The one and only GIANT HAMBURGER?!!

Seriously .. I'm getting an artery clogger for lunch!

Would all you East Coasters hate to know that I work less than one mile from an INO? In fact, this thread has made me so hungry, I'm going there for lunch today, animal style!

That's interesting about the bible verses, I've been going there for years and this is the first I've ever heard of this, let alone seen them myself.
