What kind of mattress do you have?
 

I am thinking about getting a new mattress to take the place of my 6 year old air mattress. It only cost me $29.95 and it has been a very good deal, but I am looking for something different.

This viscoelastic/memory foam keeps coming up. I have a pillow made of the stuff and it is very nice. I have found a place where I can get a king size mattress that is 8" thick of memory foam for $363.

Now to that part that I had to come to TFP to ask, because none of the reviews even come close to talking about it. But, which bed type is best for sex (I'm optimistic for the future :) )? You always hear good and bad things about water beds, but they have a bunch of problems I don't want to deal with. Normal beds work just fine I'm sure. But what about the viscoelastic/memory foam beds that you sink into and make it hard to roll around? Does anybody have one of these at home and tried it out?

We have a normal spring mattress, and it works great. It's a bit on the firm side. I've allways imagined that I'll "sink" down in a memory foam mattres, so it would decrease my level of comfort/mobility.

So I'm curious about the experiences you've had too :)

Reviews I've read on them, say they're great but if you heat up at night.. the foam retains the heat... I prefer to be chilly rather than hot.

I have a pillowtop that I'd never buy again... one, it's hard to find sheets deep enough for it, and two you can't do a 4 way flip on it to preserve the longevity of the mattress...

we have a pillowtop and I hate it. It's too hot and like Mal said, it's hard to find sheets that are deep enough for it. We're looking at getting a sleep number bed. So my advice, don't get a pillow top.

I've heard the same complaint about pillowtop mattresses.

We have a regular mattress. It was a company that makes them in Columbus, OH when we lived there so it's been a good one. But we're going to have to replace it soon...guess it got wore out or something. :lol:

Anyway...waterbeds are bad for backs, I've heard and a hassle. I'd say go simple, but get something with good support like a Sealy Posturpedic. Comfy to sleep on and works for me when having sex. :thumbsup:

it's either hilton or hyatt that has the sleep number beds in all their rooms.. I was not impressed at all with them- it was seriously like sleeping ona very expensive air mattress.. the aerobed is cheaper and about as comfortable :D

Spend the night ina hotel to really check 'em out.. :D

Hmm.. I have a friend who bought one and she loves it. I guess we will have to try it out first and see what we think. I've also heard that it takes a bit of getting used to as you have to experiment with the settings until you find the perfect "fit". I wish I could find out what mattresses the Mariott I stayed at in Greensboro had. I've never felt so comfortable on a bed before. I wanted to sneak one out of the hotel and take it home :lol:

I toss and turn a lot, and the memory foam is NOT a winner in that situation. It gets formed up a certain way, which may be comfortable if you don't move around a lot but it's decidedly UNcomfortable if you reposition a lot. I also don't like the thermal characteristics. Feels cold when you get in, then starts retaining heat. Much prefer a regular old mattress.

Ive had sealy and other such and hated them. I have an Original Mattress Factory bed and WOW! I wouldnt trade it for the world.

Call the hotel and ask them -- i remember asking the marriott in nashua, nh about their mattresses because it was soooo comfortable - they told me the name and i don't remember it - it wasn't a sealy/serta/springair -- one of the mainstream companies.. they may be custom made for marriot.. but ooooh are they nice... :D

What kind of mattress do I have?
A lumpy one, that sags in the middle. We've really got to get a new one. Sometimes I get a better nights sleep when I fall asleep on the recliner. But, that's the cat's territory, so I get to contend with him trying to reclaim his rightfull space all night.

Shesus mentioned a waterbed. No, no, no,no...a thousand times...no! I had one years ago. My back has never, before or since, hurt so bad as when I had that abomination. Never...ever...again.

we don't have a pillow top but bought one for it so that we could still do the rotations though we forget often. The bed is now 10 years old about 1/2 of the life expectency/warranty from what I recall when I bought it.

I'd like to buy a new one... but this works for the moment.

One of the things to note, when they say they will match anyone's mattress, it's a bit of a misnomer since lots of time Sleey's has exclusives as does 1-800-Matress as does Macy's. Its annoying and you have to do the due diligence to get the comparables if you want to compare apples to apples.

Using a Serta Pillow top type thinger here.

THe pillow top isnt massive, the beds only 15" deep , so finding sheets isnt a problem at all. (Queen Size)

My gf and I love this bed, i added a mattress pad on it too for extra squishyness.

Best 350$ ever. (Got the mattress, box and frame in a killer deal through sears because their add was wrote incorrectly and i abused the system. *evil* )

I've got a memory foam matress.. I don't know what brand or anything, but it's got a lambswool bed topper and a regular mattress pad over it.

It's great for sleeping, but not so great for sex. Positions are difficult because it feels like you're sinking into the mattress- like with him on top, it's like I'm being enveloped by the mattress, and with doggie style our knees are sinking in so much that it's like they're in a black hole. I bought a nice 6" king size feather bedtopper from HSN for $20 and we put that on the floor and go to town.

I have a foam core matress--not memory foam, but it's hypo-allergenic, no springs, etc. I really like it. Paid a lot for it (got a Cal King, so that adds to the cost for sure), but I'm really happy with it. You don't sink into it, but it still absorbs a lot of movement, which is good if you share a bed with someone who sleeps like a breaching whale...or a dog that circles, circles, circles (winding up the sheets away from you, by the way) before finding their *spot*.

I wouldn't trust a king size bed that can be bought for under $500. We just got a pillowtop king size (can't remember the brand) for abotu $700. I like it a lot.

It was from a clearance store. Supposedly, it retails for $1200. We didn't do a box spring because we plan on getting a platform bed. I guess you need a higher quality mattress if you are planning on not using a box spring.

At home our queen size bed is very comfy for sleep and most bedroom activities, I'm pretty sure it's one of the mainstream quality beds, either a top of the line Sealy, Serta, Stearns & Foster but I forgot which.

Last time I stayed in Toronto I slept on a "Westin Heavenly Dog Bed" (at the Westin Harbour Castle) ...damn that bed was awesomely comfy and way better than my own bed.

We have a futon. It's not a cheap futon by any means, and you can tell. It's actually really comfortable but very firm. I like it.

When I was in high school I had a Simmons Beautyrest--the bowling ball mattress--without a pillowtop. I LOVED it. It was the most comfortable bed I've ever owned. I'd like to get another Beautyrest if we go back to a conventional bed.

From what I know, the hotels specify how their mattresses are to be made. That's why they're so comfy. If you purchase one on your own, you will get whatever the mfg sends you, so to speak. And not the mattress you slept on in the hotel. :confused:

We have a Temper-pedic. It is awesome. I never sleep as well, even in the nicest hotels!! We've had it for several years now. You never have to turn it. It is warm in the winter and cool in the summer. It sort of molds to your body and to your body heat. I can't say enough good things about them.

They are a little pricy; however, they last for 20+ years so the cost amortizes well.

waterbeds are the best for sex... and I have a 6" foam one... and I love it... I've never had a bad night of sleep on it.

Water beds are awful, only people with odd backs love them. If you have an odd back, and love your waterbed, I salute you!

Air number beds are bullshit. Plain and simple. It's literally no different than an overmarketed inflatable mattress. We housesat and selpt on one of those damn balloon beds. I put mine up firm, she did hers soft. I rolled over, and fell the hell right off my higher-firmer airbag directly on to her weakly inflated one. I kept getting stuck in the space between the two airbeds. What a total POS that was.

Spring beds can be decent; I've had one or two in my life that were pretty good.

However, you can have my memory foam bed after I'm dead and gone. Other than that you're going to have to fight me for it. I can not express how much I love that bed. It costs a fortune, and takes maybe 2 weeks to a month to get used to sleeping on. Some people never do; as my grandma could not. Sucks for those people is all I can say.

Memory foam is amazingly supportive, dead wonderful to sleep on, f'ing amazing. Okay: amazing. That's all there is to it.

We got our from dormia instead of tempur pedic becuase I like spending 50% less for the same thing.
