A Night With Harry, Carrie, and Garp

Skogafoss and I went to this charity event called A Night With Harry, Carrie, and Garp.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...q/13f60e99.jpg

It was a reading by Stephen King, JK Rowling, and John Irving to benefit two charities. The night that we went Stephen King was introduced by Kathy Bates, his #1 fan. :D King reads from his short story that was in Stand By Me about the pie eating contest, John Irving reads from A Prayer For Owen Meany, and JK read from Harry Potter, The Half Blood Prince.

New York, NY – August 9th, 2006 -- For those book lovers and fans world-wide who could not attend the star-studded literary event at Radio City Music Hall last week, “AN EVENING WITH HARRY, CARRIE & GARP” will now be available to watch free of charge in its entirety for two days only. On Thursday, August 10 and Friday, August 11 MSN will stream the event at http://video.msn.com/v/us/v.htm, and beginning on Saturday,

August 12 until the end of the month, highlights will be available on demand. MSN will enable viewers to make contributions to The Haven Foundation and Doctors Without Borders.
(Anyways, I thought I'd share it here and ask that if anyone can save the stream it would be much appreciated. I haven't had the time to put it together to do so.)

If you could put together 3 literary people on the same stage who would you want to see together and what would you want them to read?

For me I'd like to see, Maurice Sendak (Where the Wild Things Are), Dr. Suess (Green Eggs & Ham), and Richard Bach (Illusions).

updated link to just highlights of the event

Well, Dr. Seuss wouldn't do much reading being dead and all. :)

Since we are including dead people, I would say William Shakespeare, Herman Melville, and Shel Silverstein. It wouldn't matter to me which masterpiece of theirs they read.

Elphaba 08-11-2006 05:27 PM

And Richard Bach is Stephen King. :)

Of living authors, I would choose:

Amy Tan (hopefully attended by her band mates Dave Barry & King)
Toni Morrison
Alice Walker

Let's not forget the ladies. :)

You're kidding, right? Tell me you're kidding!

Living or dead? Mark Twain, Kurt Vonnegut, and either Ambrose Bierce or Tom Wolfe.

EEP! Kidding, no. Major senior moment yes. From Wiki, I don't appear to be the only one ....

This article is about the author of Jonathan Livingston Seagull. For the pseudonym of Stephen King, see Richard Bachman.
I loved Bach's books; Bachman is a different kettle of fish. Sorry.

I would have to go with F. Scott Fitzgerald (reading Diamond as Big as the Ritz), Ray Luciano (from the Umpire Strikes Back = his short stories of being a MLB umpire) and Nicholas Pileggi (any short about real mafia).

And if one couldn't make it Howard Stern reading from Miss America. (Have to add the Stern plug)

PS: Elph....... Toni Morrison  yech had to read Sula and I never read such a poorly written, depressing piece of ...... in my life.\

still love ya Elph. :icare:

I'd say J.K. Rowling from Harry Potter, Fitzgerald's G reat Gatsby, and Homer reading the Oddysey.

Amnesia620 08-14-2006 06:27 AM

Oh wow...I'm surprised...I would've surely thought someone would have beat me to this one...

Authors, living or dead?

My first choice would DEFINITELY be the great Edgar Allen Poe with The Raven

My second choice would definitely be another great author Hunter S. Thompson with Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas

and My third would have to be Anne Rice with The Queen Of The Damned.

I'm surprised no one mentioned the first two yet...?!

By The Way, Cynthetiq - Thank you for the info on the Harry Carrie and Garp. I enjoyed that very very much!

Sage 08-14-2006 07:09 AM

I don't know if Anne Rice would be kosher reading her old stuff since she's gone all goody two shoes :)

Mine would have to be:

Alan Watts (any work of his would be faboo... just to be in the same room with him would be awesome)

Phillip K Dick (reading one of his short stories)

and George R R Martin (reading from any of his books)

I like this game :)

Damn, I heard about this but there was no way I could swing it. Sure, we get football, but when it comes to culture..........

I'll post my three when my envy has abated.

frogza 08-16-2006 01:04 PM

My answer would vary by my mood but I think the ones that would pop up most often would be:
C. S. Lewis reading Mere Christianity
Patrick F McManus reading any of his stories
Steven Hawking reading Universe in a Nutshell

Glory's Sun 08-16-2006 01:09 PM

I'll just copy Amnesia620's list. That would be one hell of a reading.

/me chuckles at the Stephen King = Bachman discovery :p

warrrreagl 08-17-2006 05:20 AM

Stephen King reading any segment from The Dark Tower, Sid Caesar reading from his autobiography, and Carl Sagan reading from Dragons of Eden. The King, the Ceaser, and the Genius.

I actually got to hear the third one....

Cynthetiq 10-03-2008 04:05 AM

I found the SK reading.... I'll dig around for the others...

Seeing as lots of the authors I would mention have already been mentioned, then I would say...

Tom Robbins reading from Fierce invalids home from hot climates

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry reading Flight to Arras

and Mark Leyner reading from Et tu, babe?

Owen Meany is such a great freaking book.

jewels 10-03-2008 05:53 AM

Some really good ones have been mentioned. I'd add:
D.H. Lawrence - any of his novels really
Mary Roberts Rinehart - The Wall as I was obsessed with it as a teen
Anton Chekhov - any/all the stories in Shadows and Light.

Sion 10-03-2008 08:10 PM

I'd like to see Jesus H. Christ reading from The New Testament :D

ColonelSpecial 10-03-2008 10:34 PM

I would love:
Shel Silverstein reading Where the Sidewalk Ends
Madeleine L'Engle reading Ring of Endless Light
Gale Zoe Garnett reading Visible Amazement

The last one would be my favorite.
