Both are great. I would say you need to try and fit both into your lifetime, so why not do what maked the most sense now based on deals and the time of year you can go (Med in the summer, Hawaii any other time). I have been to Maui twice. In October the water was great. It was a little more rough, and therefore not as clear, in January. But in January you get to see the whales.

In Maui, I would stay away from the big hotels that keep you far from the natural beauty of the island. Stay in a nice condo on the water. Eat out every other night and stay in and grill the others watching the sunset. It can be a very laid back and relaxing. It is my favorite place on the planet (so far).

With a Med cruise you get history and elegance. You can relax on the ship and do heavy duty sightseeing during the day. If you cruise, you will set sail by late afternoon so you will eat on the ship for dinner at least. The French coast is amazing. Venice was wonderful. Trying to see Rome in one day is frustrating but worth the try.
