You're describing the metaphor that "love is war". This is one of many representations of the relationships between the sexes that is valid in our society. Gender roles is actually the root of this much more than sexuality, women have quite a lot of reasons to be upset... they have 2000 years of unequal balance of power. Of course it is a struggle and a long-standing metaphor has taken hold.
