I used to have two male rats that were unneutered (not sure if you can neuter a rat anyway). They were mainly active at night and I could hear them beating the hell out of each other. It was mostly a territorial thing I guess. Separate cages wouldn't be a bad idea, and they aren't very expensive at all.
