My two cents. Low voltage halogen lights for places under kitchen counters, and indirect lighting for living areas have become very popular.
Pros - They give a more pleasing color balance than flourescent lighting, you can get a lot of light out of a little 15w bulb as compared to other types.
Cons - They require you to change the bulbs with gloves so you don't get oil from your skin on them. They are fairly expensive, $10 for a small round bulb. They don't last as long as flourescent. And, they do give off a lot of heat. Clients complain about their kitchen counters getting very warm.
