I know I know, this is stupid. But Halo is a givin, if you get an Xbox, you have to get it. Just my opinion.
Also, what type of games do you like? I like the FPS Shoot'em up games!
I thought the X-Box Live was pretty much plug'n'play. But I have never had it, so I couldn't tell you much there.
I just looked on Google real quick and did find this.

Q: What's needed for online play?
A: Xbox LIVE!, a subscription package from Microsoft is required for online play. It retails at $50 and comes with a one year subscription. The Xbox LIVE! starter kit includes the Xbox LIVE! installation disc along with your one year subscription and a voice communicator (headset) for communication during online play. Keep in mind that a broadband connection (Cable Modem or DSL) is required to take advantage of this. There is no narrowband support.
Q: Can I download stuff through Xbox LIVE?
A: Yes you can. You can download patches, levels, characters, or whatever that the developers of the game make. This depends on the game though. Not each and every game has downloads.
