You can learn a little bit, like stock phrases and such. I learned this much, myself.
However, if you take even an introductory class or book (I did the latter), you can learn a lot from watching anime. Of course, you can learn even more by actually talking to someone fluent in Japanese but this isn't as easy as finding anime...
