Those familiar with the New York metro are know that the New York Post isn't exactly a shining example of print journalism. In fact, of the 4 major city dailies (Times, Daily News, Newsday, Post) it's the one to be taken least seriously. Where the Times usually becomes the preferred historical reference for research purposes, and contains "All the news fit to print" the Post prefers screaming lurid headlines in typefaces legible from across Broadway and is written at the junior high school comprehension level.
When I heard this story my first thought was it was done intentionally to send a message about the Yankees' inability to dominate, but merely beat their opponents unlike in years past. And of course, there's the added benefit of free publicity. But now I just generally believe they were trying to beat everyone else to the punch, not waiting for the actual story to finish before going to press, and justly deserve the ridicule of the city and country.
