Yanks Lose
If only it were true.
Yanks lose (link) New York newspaper prints editorial saying Yankees lost Oct. 17, 2003 SportsLine.com wire reports NEW YORK -- How close did the Boston Red Sox come to reaching the World Series? Even the New York Post figured the Red Sox were a shoo-in to hold a lead and beat the rival New York Yankees. Some editions of the newspaper Friday morning carried an editorial bemoaning a loss by the Yankees, who trailed before beating the Red Sox 6-5 in 11 innings in Game 7 of the ALCS. "The Yankees couldn't get the job done," the editorial read, adding: "The hitting fell short and the bullpen simply didn't deliver. It's a crying shame that Roger Clemens' career had to end on a losing note." Clemens, the Yankees' 41-year-old pitcher, will retire when the season ends for New York -- sometime after facing the Florida Marlins in the World Series, which begins Saturday night. Post Editor in Chief Col Allan blamed the foul-up on a simple production error. "We had prepared two editorials, one in the event of the Yankees winning, one with the Yankees losing," he said. "When we transmitted the pages to our printing facility, the wrong button was struck and the wrong editorial sent." The mistake was caught and corrected in later editions. But City Council Speaker Gifford Miller -- the target of another editorial in Friday's paper -- waved an oversized copy of the Post gaffe at a Yankees pep rally at City Hall. Those familiar with the New York metro are know that the New York Post isn't exactly a shining example of print journalism. In fact, of the 4 major city dailies (Times, Daily News, Newsday, Post) it's the one to be taken least seriously. Where the Times usually becomes the preferred historical reference for research purposes, and contains "All the news fit to print" the Post prefers screaming lurid headlines in typefaces legible from across Broadway and is written at the junior high school comprehension level.
When I heard this story my first thought was it was done intentionally to send a message about the Yankees' inability to dominate, but merely beat their opponents unlike in years past. And of course, there's the added benefit of free publicity. But now I just generally believe they were trying to beat everyone else to the punch, not waiting for the actual story to finish before going to press, and justly deserve the ridicule of the city and country. -Mikey |
