Actually, I disagree with this comment - The extreme stress brought an underlying mental health issue (a.k.a chemical imbalance) to the surface.
There were always hints of the mental health issue before the medical issue, but the medical issue threw it in her face and said "you now need to deal with me". The extreme stress caused the chemical imbalance to really show it's true form --- which is what her true form would then really be.
She is seeing a Psych and is on meds to control that, and it is working for the most part.
