Not quite true.

The CD-ROM's themselves weren't designed as a boot device, like floppies were. The earlier CD-ROMS were, of course, PIO-0 to PIO-1. Only drives of IDE mode 3 or higher have boot capability.

(I spent the last year working with old hardware. Can you blame me?)
