I dated a Jewish girl once who's father told me that when he was in the Navy in the 70's, some of the Southern guys he served with wanted to know why he didn't have horns. Apparently, they had heard (or been told) that Jewish people all had horns, but had never met one before. These same guys were afriad to shower with black men, as they were afraid the "black" would come off. It strikes me that either you were the victim of some good-natured ribbing, or truly, there are still people around who just plain make stuff up about people they don't understand (Jews, African Americans, or in this case, some remote tribe somewhere.) Yes, there are very remote tribes that do not often come into contact with the industrialized world, but they're still human beings, and are built more or less like you or me.
I'd like to think that we are a bit more sophisticated than that.
