This looks like another case of 'look what Apple did, let's copy them'.
(I don't agree with the current patent system to make a monopoly for Apple for years, but there should be a set licensing fee (10% for 3 years) that these companies should have to pay if they did not do any R&D prior to Apple or any other company patenting a tech product.)
