For me there's a big difference between a typo and a fundamental misunderstanding of the word. Generally I'll point out errors with homophones, etc, for the purpose of educating the poster, as a side thought to my true response.
On a serious note, it's really very important to convey one's ideas in a coherent fashion. Think of it as going to a job interview and having your shirt buttons misaligned. Is the employer going to be distracted from your merits? You bet. Take thirty seconds to check your post before you submit it. You might even think better of a negative remark!
