I use Wordpress as a standalone, but this is mainly because I want full control over the system. You need a domain and web hosting to do this.
I like Wordpress in that the system seems to make complete sense. I chose it based on reviews I read and comparisons to other systems. I have little trouble teaching people how to use it, even with zero blogging experience. It's only the setting up and alternations that can take a bit of technical know-how.
That said, I'd suggest trying out the Wordpress web-based blog system, as it is the user-friendly version of a good thing. It's similar in setup to blogger.com and other web-based blogging systems.
