My bad. A friend pointed out that Kubuntu is just Ubunutu with KDE windowmanager. So I should be able to remove/disable KDE an configure Gnome instead.
To install Ubuntu directly it's a question of figuring out what parameter is needed for this laptop. ACPI is the mostlikly candidate.
