I drove a diesel W203 from Munchen, Germany to Salzberg, Astria and then into the Alps to Bad Gastein. Oh what a wonderful driver, even being a diesel it did not drive like my parents 85 300SD. No turbo lag, no pedal mush. It was very fun to drive on the Autobahn.
Yes it was much more reserved and uppercrust looking. I don't find that the new luxury version of the C class does it much justice in comparison.
I didn't realize they made a wagon version.....  interesting!
