Thanks for the info. I tried ImgBurn and I have burnt a disk at 2.4x. It looks good and verified ok too. I tried it in a normal player. it didn't work. I took it out and replaced it and it worked. However it got stuck about 40 minutes in but a quick rewind of a few seconds and then it worked. I still haven't played it through - that will have to wait until tonight!
I don't know if there are any experts here, but the major difference between cdrecord and ImgBurg is that the latter goes through a phase of setting up the layer transition point. With cdrecord I did not do this - I gust burned a big iso onto the disk and let cdrecord handle the transition.
My feeling is that my problems are due to crap media. I have Infiniti branded 8x discs. DaveOrion's link showed this media to be not very good (RICOHJPN D00 001). I'll get some Verbatim and see if it's better. The word on the 'net is that only Verbatim will do, so we'll see.
Even my test above does work, I don't feel comfortable relying on this "cheaper" media.
If anyone there's in the UK - I wonder what Trading Standards would make of these cheaper discs being sold as clearly they don't work. Would they accept that they were "Not Fit For Purpose".
