Of course, I am making a leap. You're right. I was indulging myself in a little bit of personal fancy.
But it's no secret that conservatives have indulged Islamic fundamentalism in Afghanistan in the past in order to prevent the spread of the obviously much more objectionable scourge of communism. They were, in fact, protecting the god-ful from the godless. And being that there are obvious facets of both Christian and Islamic fundamentalism that coincide in mutual aspirations for theocratic societies, it's not so hard to imagine that, in a pre-9/11 world, American evangelicals might find the struggles of Muslim holy warriors to be of a nature less foul than we do today.
Granted, it's probably more likely that they had little or no opinion of them at all unless they had a personal interest in the region.
