There was some interesting analysis of this over at
How To: Get 32 AA Batteries from a Single 6 Volt Battery - Lifehacker. A couple of major points:
* Not all 6V batteries are made this way.
* Those that are aren't using top quality AA batteries (carbon-zinc as opposed to alkaline)
