One of my coworkers loves Curves. She's in her late 50s and had never really done gym-type exercise before. She said it's easy to stay in a routine and there aren't many excuses to try to do less or skip something.
My favorite was the YMCA. No one gave a crap what anyone else was doing or looked like because there were few "gymmies". I ended up so motivated that I went five times per week and dropped 50 lbs in 4 months. I met with one of their personal trainers, told him what I wanted to accomplish and where my limitations lay. They also have free nutrition classes, etc.
We go to a World Gym now. I get embarrassed because the chicks are skinny and I've grown a butt. Plus some of the gyms are so buff they can't walk straight. Which is weird. I don't like waiting in line for machines, either. But I have zero attention span so the variety of machines works well.
