Wait a minute... Are you talking about the little icons down by the clock on the taskbar?
If you right-click the icon for the actual connection you can uncheck those two boxes at the bottom, which will lose the icon on the desktop and stop it from notifying you when something is wrong.
You can just reverse it and check those same two boxes on the wireless connection to get it to show up on the taskbar.
