Of course, the red brick road would have led her home I think. OR....I think she would have had better luck on the red brick road because it matched the shoes. I bet she would've gotten to the Wizard quicker with the red road. I think that the munchkins and the 'Good' witch were just getting their kicks sending her on the yellow brick road because they were bored.

The Wizard of Oz, centering on the Wicked Witch of the West, who really a misunderstood, but good-hearted person.
Maguire has written several retellings of fairy tales, having since done Cinderella from the POV of one of the stepsisters, and Snow White moved to the Borgias' Italy. There's a sequel to
Wicked,
Son of a Witch which isn't quite as good, but still worth the read.
