I wouldn't quit my job unless I either had enough money to retire or I had another job already lined up.
If I was fired or laid off, I would look for another job right away. I could afford to be out of work for a little bit but it sometimes takes a while to find a new job. If I farted around for weeks or even months, I might still be looking for a job even after my savings had been used up.
