I wouldn't trust a king size bed that can be bought for under $500. We just got a pillowtop king size (can't remember the brand) for abotu $700. I like it a lot.
It was from a clearance store. Supposedly, it retails for $1200. We didn't do a box spring because we plan on getting a platform bed. I guess you need a higher quality mattress if you are planning on not using a box spring.
