ACK!!! No!! Freezing removes the moisture from the coffee and will degarade its quality over time... Coffee should not be stored in the freezer, it should be stored in an airtight container in a cupboard or on the counter... and used within 1 -2 weeks (2 weeks at most...)

Since the present is for him, I'd go with the good coffee maker (how often do you visit, and is it really a problem to get up at 7:00am? Go to the kitchen and keep him company - I'm sure he'd love that as a present..
