Cause once it's in AVI, I'm all set. Because I can use VirtualDub to cut/edit, and then TMPGEnc to shrink it.
My only problem is the converting to AVI. Is there a dvd ripper that rips exactly to avi or anything besides vob?
I don't want to burn, I want to rip videos onto my computer.

Go to
http://doom9.net/ and look at the basics and the FAQ. And yes it takes a long, long time. I have a bitchen computer, and it takes 2 to 4 hours per DVD to convert to xvid. You need to read the guides so you know what you’re doing, this is a complex process and not something that is learned in an hour.
I use Gordian knot and it works great, once you learn how to use it, here is a link to a guide on Gordian knot

once again this is a lengthy process.
