Time Committment & Bulking Up

How much time, roughly, does it take to start putting on some muscle gain while working out? I'm sure there is a TON of variables, but generally, how much?

1 month ~= 1 pound?

I just want to get a clearer idea of how long it will take to accomplish my goals.
