Mmm, I agree. Three questions to ask her if things look like they're going to progress:
"Have you broken up with your boyfriend?"
"Does _he_ know you've broken up with him?"
"What's he in for?"
If the answers to those questions aren't promising, you might also want to find out if he belongs to one of those social clubs they have in California with the funny names -- you know, "Norteno," "Sureno?" (some irony here)
