Something I just don't understand is.. why do they have to go and trash San Francisco for pure cinematic thrills? The whole deal with Magento leading a horde of disposable evil mutants is as campy as the way the villains were dealt with in Mortal Kombat 2 (if you never saw this movie.. good) - I wanna see Mr Sinister! Pyro! Toad! ... and that's all. No disposables, please.

Run down in case you didn't know Halx (or you could just wiki it). Jean Grey = pyschic who supposedly died in the last movie, married to Cyclops, Wolverine wanted a fling with her.
Now in the comic books, X-men had just been in space defeating some randoms, when the space ship Jean Grey was in went through a cloud of something, and then the spaceship crashed into earth's sea.
Bla bla bla everyone cries when what do you know. Jean turns up. Long story short they find out she was the 'Dark Phoenix' which is some random cosmic thing that is possessing her. They defeat her, and they fnd the real jean (at bottom of lake) but still has phoenix's powers.
My guess movie plot: Oh no Jean's dead. News: comet hit earth. Went into lake. Bla bla bla. Then the Brotherhood of Mutants go very public. X-men go to intercept when - what's that Jean!?
Or so I guess
