I just saw Dredg last night in their tour's finale in Hollywood. Holy-effin-wow. I loved Dredg before, but after last night, they're without doubt one of my favorite bands. I don't think I've ever seen a better live show in my life. Those guys are INCREDIBLE. Gavin's voice nearly made me wet my pants.
Also, the new album is fantastic. A lot of people will criticize it because it's structured much differently than Leitmotif and El Cielo, but those people are usually just overly critical, pretentious music snobs. The album is a much tighter collection of traditional "songs" instead of wandering movements filled in with plenty of soaring, experimental instrumental pieces between each song. And though I expect this album will be blown away by their work in the future, that doesn't diminish the fact that Catch Without Arms is one of the year's best albums and a definite must get. It's unfair for people to judge them based on the incredibly high standard and expectations their fans have built for them, but that's just a testament to how good a band they've become over the years.
If you ever have a chance to see them live, I highly suggest it. It's quite an experience. And yes, the drummer plays the piano while knocking out the beats, and it is freaking awesome.
