My father in law is a peace corps director for a few development programs here in Guatemala. For what he has told us, it's an amazing experience and you shouldn't be that concerned about getting in touch with your family. At least in Guatemala and El Salvador, is almost for sure taht you will have an Internet Cafe at a walking distance from where you are working.
