Filming Technique

I've noticed that in some films (Can't name one off the top of my head) have a certain way of fading in and out between scene. ie: In Sums of all Fears, they changed major scene by using an overview of of a city via Satalite view. But after awhile, they stopped doing that. They stick with this way of changing scenes but after an hour or so, the filmmaker decides that they stop using it and use the old fashion quick switch.

Now, why is this? It's kinda annoying that they're not being consistent.
