I live in Libertyville, Il which is in the same county.
Zion isn't the safest place in Illinois, but far from the worst.
It isn't that unlikely to have some kids riding by themselves to friends places, especially if it isn't that far. My town has still has lots of kids playing together without adults at times.
I won't speculate on any sort of motive or possible suspect, but there isn't much more that done to protect these kids.
If the person who did it knew them, that person would've made a move eventually.
If they were just the unlucky random targets, it would've only been some other kids.
