Well, are you talking about the SharePoint Portal Server or SharePoint Services?
The SPS is free and comes with Server 2003. The PortalServer will run you major $$$$.
The SPS is quite good for a small (<500) company intranet site. It integrates nicely for authentication through AD. We are using it for File Lookup, searching and Pivot Tables and whatnot through snapins.
Also, if you use something like Axapta or Great Plains from MS, then they should be able to talk back and forth between the two systems.
