Indeed, that sentence is in the opening paragraph of my paper on Pirandello's
Henry IV. I tend to use general references to society/reality when introducing a thesis on a novel/play, because I feel that allows the reader to relate to what's going on in the written work.
Thanks again for the replies. I'm still playing around with possibities, and seeing what works best.
