What was the last thing you did before restart? Did you just install a driver which required a restart, or alternatively a program that required a restart. In that scenario it is possible that you are installing something which is not 100% agreeable with windows XP. Maybe also scan the drive for boot sector viruses, fdisk your master boot record, or seek hard drive manufacturers low level formatting utility/erasing utility to try to totally blank the drive including Master Boot Record.
