I'd suggest at least turning ActiveX to prompt, so that you can say NO before it loads anything. Even better would be to turn it off entirely and add Windows Update to your whitelist (because it uses ActiveX). Turning javascript to prompt wouldn't be a bad idea either.
Also, do a search for javacool's program, SpywareBlaster. It is useful because it innoculates you from many nasty items (you run it before you get hosed).
