Actually, for Xbox Live you pay for the year of service in advance. It's like $60 for 12 months, so roughly $5-6 dollars per month.
You will need a credit card to activate the service also. I think it's definitely worth it if you buy the right games. Pandora Tomorrow, Halo 2, sports games, etc.
