Xbox Live! is a good service, though I can't use it myself (college networks suck!) However, Xbox Live! only functions for games that are designed for Xbox Live! The original Halo isn't one of them. You'd have to search for games that specifically say they work in conjunction with Xbox Live! in order to play those games through the service. Yes, Xbox Live! is a service, it's a monthly pay-for-play service. You pay MS something like $9.95/month, they let you use Xbox Live! service. However, Xbox Live! only works with high-speed internet, and a cable-based service is probably gonna be your best bet in most situations.
What you get from Xbox Live! varies from game to game. I mean that in all seriousness. Some games that are Xbox Live! enabled give you no more than an online score tracking system. Some games offer multiplayer through Live, some offer way more. Games such as Ninja Gaiden offer Hurricane Pack, a free download for owners of that game that makes the game faster. But overall, Xbox Live! is a good service if your setup is capable (speed-wise) and you're willing to pay out the cash for it every month, and you buy games that are Xbox Live! capable.
