The P4PE is a great board, but on a dated chipset.
The 845 chipset, though spectacular, is on it's last leg.
Recently the 875 Chipset came out, and with boards like the Asus pc800 and my person favorite, the IC7 from Abit...you will get more bang for you buck going wiht a canterwood (875)
Intels cost more, but you get a lot of usual features that may not be available to amd like :
- hyper threading (it makes a massive differences, with it I encode Divx's at 82fps, compared to 60 with it disabled)
- Thermal Throttling. If you cpu gets hot, or the heatsink fan dies, your p4 will begin to throttle down it's speed until it get's back into proper temp ranges. This prevents burn up of the chip (common with AMD) while also giving you more uptime (important in a server environment).
-Advance Instructions sets like..shit I forgot the acronym. Basically instructions encoded into the core to speed certain applications. Mind you Amd also has things like 3Dnow, but Intel tends to have a higher amount. Because of Intels voice in the community, companies follow. I personally remember after intel released the p3, Adobe released a patch for the new cpu and some things were 40% faster.
Now mind you, I'm not wanting to start a flame war..far from that. Yet I can't escape the ubiquitous car analogies when talking about computers. Athlon is like toyota camry V6, while intel is like a lexus Es300. Both drive, both have the same speed, but Intel has more features thus a higher price tag. The most important thing though is both work, and work great. (For you American or European car lovers, replace analogy with comparable models.)
Me personally, I have both machines, but I do everything on my p4, cause I work photoshop.
Hope this helps man, ditch the p4pe and grab an IC7.
The corsair would rule on the 875 chipset.
