They usually highlight the letters you need to press, from my experience.
As someone who mostly games on the PC, I feel sorry for anyone who has to play a complex FPS on a gamepad. It just doesn't work that well. Halo works pretty well because the game isn't that elaborate. Two guns, nades, run, jump, and shoot. That's pretty much it. I just couldn't imagine playing a game like BF1942 or Raven Shield well on a gamepad.
(Now, the opposite is true for something like Madden. Now that requires a gamepad. Good thing I have one.
