i think that it's the consoles and the makers of games. few games are made for "hard core gamers" anymore. i liked Dreamcast, i felt that was a very very good system, but it didn't appeal to a wide audience (i felt it was a gamer's system) so it didn't do well.
Companies also, are making consoles into computers, and console games into computer games. (The console online thing bothers me)
it used to be we had a system and stuck with it. if we couldnt improve the graphics or engine, we made the most out of what we had. Or, if we couldnt change systems we packed as much into one game as possible. Compare Donkey Kong Country to any other SNES game, it is miles ahead in terms of graphics...
