It is kind of sad. For a lot of people around my age (30 this year), it was a big part of college and our twenties...Widespread Panic too (I went to school at UGA and Panic was just starting to get big after I started school there). Now Phish has decided to break up and Widespread doesn't sound the same anymore after Mikey Houser (guitarist) died. It's kind of signifies the end of our youth for a lot of us. I'm by no means old and can still have my fun seeing many of the other bands I enjoy, but I don't think it'll ever seem the same anymore.
I enjoy Cheese's older stuff (their live album that came out around 98 and a lot of the boots I have from back then are great), but they seem to have changed their sound more and more into something that, while I can enjoy seeing live, I opt for other trips over.
I've heard good stuff about New Monsoon, but haven't checked them out yet.
