Shark threats really get a bad rap. When was the last time you actually saw a shark in the wild? There are much bigger concerns about the ocean and the beach than a possible shark. Stingrays come to mind. They are all over the place here, but nobody says "lets not go to the beach, there was a stingray attack."
Maybe its just San Diego, but id be far more worried about contaminated water than sharks. And besides, dont imitate food and you wont get eaten.
