This is the time that everyone makes there plans for playing in the sun. I too am planning a beach trip soon, so this is not in anyway trying to scare people from going to the beach.

This is a home video of a Great White shark off the coast of NC. Thats right North Carolina.

True. But i think just knowing a great white is out there, off the east coast would scare alot of people.

Great Whites are there whether you "know" it or not. Another was sited about 1km off the beach at Tulum in Mexico recently. A dive trip about a year and a half ago had one circling the boat off NC (no divers were in the water at the time). They're a lot more common than one tends to think and you almost never hear of a GW shark attacking a person. Coincidence? Nope.

Shark threats really get a bad rap. When was the last time you actually saw a shark in the wild? There are much bigger concerns about the ocean and the beach than a possible shark. Stingrays come to mind. They are all over the place here, but nobody says "lets not go to the beach, there was a stingray attack."

Maybe its just San Diego, but id be far more worried about contaminated water than sharks. And besides, dont imitate food and you wont get eaten.

I'm not really concerned of sharks, but i also have to consider that i am going to be doing alot of surf fishing. I always wade out to about chest deep water fishing.... And even a small shark would scare you then. But i know there are sharks there even if you don't see them.

Sweet!!! I live in NC, and my "before I die" dream is to go swimming with sharks, or go down in a shark cage. Anybody know of an ecologically responsible way I can do this? Seems like (wo)man+nature just generally doesn't mix - I don't want to turn sharks into the aquatic equivalent of the nosy bears at Yellowstone - but....damn I want to go swim with sharks!!!! I've just heard that the whole "eco-tourist" movement is turning some sharks into pests - following boats looking for handouts, etc., and the more frequently they come into contact with people, the more likely it is that something bad is going to happen. Sharks test things with their mouths, much like small children, only they happen to have razors for teeth. And it's going to be the shark that gets blamed, not the people who trained it to hang around looking for tasty handouts. So, how can I go in a shark cage and meet a shark in the water without contributing to this problem?

Easy. Take up scuba diving. There are plenty of sharks in NC. Sand Tigers are prolific on the wrecks there. No need to lure them, feed them, or harass them. They are there and stroll around the wrecks as you dive.

I have dived many times with sharks in Australia - White and Black-tipped Reef, Nurse, Leopard, and Wobbegongs. Although these are generally non-aggressive sharks, it was still a very exilarating experience.

Although I never saw any, the nasty ones were there. Only a couple miles down the coast from where I was diving, a guy on his honeymoon was taken by a White Pointer - right in front of his wife. Didn't stop me from going back in the water, but I did tend to "look over my shoulder" a bit after that.

I'd actually like to see a White or Tiger up close, but only from within a cage.

haha, that's what I was thinking. But more in the vein of shark meat that the Calgary Flames recently charred. Go Flames Go!!


Oh, and like platypus I've been in the water in Australia and the Caribbean with sharks before. They weren't the big scary Great Whites (or at least I didn't see them if they were there) but they were still amazing and exhilerating to see on a dive. Feel like sandpaper.
