There are several complaints about the transmission dropping into neutral under load.
I rode in some guy's 2001 S430 (almot brand new at the time), and it did that when he gunned it at 45 mph or so. It nearly redlined and the car did absolutely nothing. Of course he wouldn't admit his precious Mercedes was having transmission problems, so he tried to say he bumped the shifter (funny considering both hands were on the wheel when it acted up) as he frantically shifted between neutral and drive for about 10 seconds before it started working again.
